Editor Spotlight with Jesse Rucilez 2nd Quarter 2022

EDITOR SPOTLIGHT!

Here at S.A.V.A. Press, we believe that turnabout is fair play. Our Editor-In-Chief, Jesse, likes to put authors on the spot with his probing “Infrequently Asked Questions” segments. And, true to his own convictions, Jesse doesn’t mind being put on the spot in return. As such, we’ve reached out to all of the fantastic authors that we’ve published this quarter and collected a batch of equally probing questions for our humble editor to chew on. We think that this’ll be a great way to end this quarter, and we hope that you’ll agree.

And now, without further ado, S.A.V.A. Press is proud to present: Jesse Rucilez!

Roy Dorman (Author of “First Date With A Contract Killer”): “Who are your favorite writers?”

Jesse: “Well, for starters, my all-time favorite author is the late, great, Harlan Ellison. Although I love his fiction, I mainly enjoy his nonfiction. He wrote with such passion, and he wasn’t afraid to take a stand for what he believed in.

“When it comes to fiction, though, The Maestro, Stephen King is second to none. The Dead Zone is my favorite novel of all time, but objectively, I think that The Shining is King’s best work. I know everyone loves The Stand, but not me…

“Aside from those two, there’s Ray Bradbury, whose body of work is ridiculously good, and I think that Fahrenheit 451 should be required reading in high school.

“And John Steinbeck—what an absolute genius! Of Mice and Men has to be one of the top ten most brilliant stories ever set to paper. That’s another one that should be required reading in high school.

“Of course, I love the old masters of horror: H.G. Wells, Poe, and Lovecraft, too. Rod Serling is another big influence. His monologues on The Twilight Zone were always thought-provoking, and he wrote the brilliant Requiem For A Heavyweight.

“Also gotta mention my friend who’s appeared on S.A.V.A., Mr. Titus Green. I wish more people would read his work. It’s a crime that he isn’t agented and being sought out by major publishing houses.

“Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I’ve read every Sherlock Holmes story that Doyle ever wrote. Not only is Holmes such an iconic character, on par with James Bond, but every writer out there could do a lot worse than to study how deftly Doyle was able to describe his characters in one well-written sentence.”

Roy Dorman: “How do you find the time to read, write, and be the editor of what seems to be a busy literary site? And still sleep?”

Jesse: “Well, honestly, the reason I decided to only publish quarterly was so that I could have long breaks in between where I could work on other projects. As far as reading goes, I try to fit it in whenever I can. One of my favorite things to do is read while I’m eating, especially if I’m dining out.”

Roy Dorman: “What music do you like? Any all-time favorite groups?”

Jesse: “Oh, man. I could go on for days! But my stock answer to this question is that, truthfully, I mostly listen to Classic Rock and Classic Country. But I’m an 80s kid, so I grew up listening to Twisted Sister and RATT, then grunge, of course, in the 90s.

“My all-time favorites are the singer-songwriters like Warren Zevon, Carole King, and Merle Haggard. When it comes to Classic Rock, there’s no finer band than The Eagles. I also love The Band. I should explain that I used to sing and play drums in a garage band called Super Chief, so I really look up to the singer-drummers like Don Henley, Levon Helm, and Phil Collins.

“When it comes to Classic Country, you can’t beat The Outlaws: Willie and Waylon. But I also appreciate the crooners like George Jones, George Straight, and Vince Gill.

“When it comes to Hard Rock, it’s AC/DC all the way. R.I.P. Malcom Young, and may Angus rock on forever!

“If you wanna get into the really heavy stuff, the absolute kings are Black Sabbath, followed by Iron Maiden. But two of my favorite heavy bands will always be Danzig and RollinsBand. Great workout music! Glenn Danzig and Henry Rollins are two of my biggest influences in life, as well. Rollins is also a prolific writer, which I don’t think a lot of people know.

“All of that is just a sampling of my tastes. I love bluegrass, classical, even some early rap and hip-hop. The only genres that I generally can’t stand are death metal, club music, gangster rap, and reggae. Wanna drive me out of room? Put on Bob Marley…

“Finally, if you really wanna know what I like, my favorite song of all time is ‘Desperados Under The Eaves,’ by Warren Zevon. Talk about great lyrics. Look that one up sometime.”

And with that, I’d like to conclude this interview by thanking everyone who’s taken the time to read it, and the preceding content on this site.

Special thanks to Author Roy Dorman for sending in the questions.

See ya next quarter!
